Bringing Spirituality and Justice Together

Spiritual Life

Worship (Sundays, 11 am)
Worship at Calvary is informal and casual, blending both traditional and more contemporary and creative liturgy and music. Laity are actively involved in worship planning, leadership and participation.

We celebrate Holy Communion the first Sunday of each month.

Children's Sunday School (Sundays, 10 am; September-June)
Children, ages 3-12, gather for Sunday School before the worship service. Lessons are based on a short Scripture passage, and generally include singing and some arts-and-crafts activity related to the passage.

Adult Sunday School (Two Sundays a month- see calendar, 10 am)-
Adults discuss four areas of faith-- Christian tradition, Christian scriptures, Christian ethics and social ethics, Christian practices-- one area per month.

 2009 Lenten Devotional Focus:

Lent is a season for repenting or refocusing,

for intentionally rooting ourselves in God’s presence

and listening for God’s call in our lives.

It is a season of “dying”

(letting go of the habits and ways of life that

keep us from living fully and living faithfully)

and “rising”

(turning to new life, full life, life as God intends it).

Christians have long marked the season with intentional spiritual practice.

“Giving something up” is the most familiar,

sacrificing something important to us to remember our dependence on God.

“Taking on” some spiritual practice is also common—

periodic fasting, intentional daily prayer or scripture reading,

commitment to a regular act of justice or charity.

At Calvary this year, we encourage each of you to consider

one intentional way to live into the season,

but we also invite all of you to the practice of

daily Bible reading and prayer.

We ask you to use the lectionary scripture readings (listed below) setting aside at least 15 minutes each day

to prayerfully read and consider the scriptures for the following Sunday.

Ask yourself two questions each day:

1)    What gift is God giving me through this reading?

2)    What is God asking me to do through this reading?

There will be time during worship each Sunday during Lent

to share your insights into the meaning of the

“especially” passages

and what God might be saying through them.
